JOHN HEFFERNAN: THE GOVERNMENT HAS ITS SCREWS LOOSE

THIS week is the lead-up to the first NSW Corrective Services “Corrections Day”. The department is finally setting aside a day to recognise the work undertaken by correctional staff. It is believed this day, to be held on Friday, is now earmarked to become an annual event on the government calendar.

Much, if not all, of the work performed behind the imposing walls goes unseen by the general public. Be assured it is difficult and dangerous work.

Every now and again the department will release video footage of a particular incident which demonstrates the types of situations officers confront on a daily basis.

The Prison Officers Vocational Branch (POVB), the union representing correctional officers, has a slogan “We Face What You Fear”. It is appropriate.
